The Science Olympiad team has high hopes of achieving their 24th regional title as they compete at Grand Valley State University on March 28.

“I think we’ll do pretty solid in all events,” senior Evan Miller said. “Not all events have to win, but we’d like them to.”

The team has practiced their events several times per week after school, but with limited time available, the majority of preparation is expected to be done at home.

“There’s just not enough time in one hour per event, per week to be fully prepared,” coach Mike Reed said. “They cannot spend the entire time going over information because there’s just not enough time.”

Although the team graduated key seniors, Reed believes that they will still succeed at the regional competition.

“We lost a very good senior class,” Miller said. “We really counted on them. We have a similar team this year, but the competition is a lot better too.”

The top six teams at the regional competition will compete at the state competition on May 2 at Michigan State University. Reed is confident that they will continue to uphold their tradition of excellence.

“I expect students to give their best effort,” Reed said. “As long as they’ve done everything they can to prepare and they can walk away and say ‘I did my best’, that’s good.”
