Traditional Irish music session to be held at Loutit Library Oct. 19

Loutit District Library will be hosting a traditional Irish music session for musicians of all ages and skillsets on Oct. 19. These sessions take place on the third Saturday of every month.

“We supply the music, it’s a great way to learn new Irish tunes and learn the Irish style of music,” Halverson said. “It’s from beginner to advanced, we have all ranges of experience. We have players who are actually in Irish music bands that play, and we have beginners who are just learning.”

The event is free and will be taking place from 1 to 3 p.m. All are welcome to come, to listen or play. Experienced musicians will be available to help those who are just starting out.The classic Irish songs will start off at a slower, easier pace, gradually getting faster and more upbeat as the session progresses.

“We are the only Irish session here in the Tri-Cities area that meets on a regular basis, and (I thought) the library would be a perfect spot for that.” Halverson said.

The music sessions have been going on for about a year and a half now, and have had vacationing musicians come from around the country. Some GOTAK orchestra club members also stop by to play and listen.

“I wanted something that could reach the community, when you go to Ireland you see these sessions and it’s a gathering,” Halverson said.  “People come and they sit around and it’s like a community of people that come regularly at a set time and I thought that’d be pretty neat to start here in Grand Haven.”
