Senior Madison Rogers has been named a national merit semifinalist for Grand Haven High School.

“When I took the test, I had a feeling that I did well,” Rogers said. “I had a feeling that it could happen, like, it wasn’t completely out of the question.”

Rogers was shocked when she found out she was given the title.

“Mrs. Wilson came into my Spanish class and she was like ‘I’ve got news for you,’” Rogers said. “She wouldn’t tell me alone. She told me in front of my entire Spanish class and everyone started clapping and congradulating me.”

Being named a national merit semifinalist has been helpful for Rogers, including opening doors when it comes to college. She’s not sure where she wants to go, but is positive she wants to pursue medical school.

“[My family and I] went out east this summer and I got to visit some colleges,” Rogers said. “I’m really in love with Dartmouth College, University of Michigan and Hope College.”

Rogers says she’s driven to succeed and pushes herself. Having that kind of mindset towards learning has helped her work towards where she is now in high school along with her future in college.

“I’ve always been really into reading and learning,” Rogers said. “I think having a love for reading, learning and school makes it a lot easier to do this sort of thing because if you’re not enjoying it, it’s kind of hard.”
