CONFERENCE: Naiomi Elliot, Audry Greene, Melody Perez, Kyla Strang, Jakaree Hill, Brooklyn Holmes, Omega Johnson, Kate Kendall, and Natasha Williams, at Hope College for a conference in October of 2019.

Calling All Colors hosts meetings for anyone looking to make the world more accepting every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month during C lunch in room 8207.

“Calling all colors is a great opportunity to do work to make a change,” Calling All Colors advisor Hailey Barton said. “If you’re someone who cares about making our world more accepting, more inclusive, and like embracing other cultures this is a place for you.”

The club runs from 12:35 to 1:10 p.m. All are welcome to join. Members promote inclusiveness in school, with a focus on racial justice.

“I think it’s really important for all kids to belong and feel accepted and to connect with more people who are from their background,” Barton said. “Especially because Grand Haven is in a predominantly white community,”

Meetings are a hybrid style, allowing online students to participate as well. There are two conferences, one in the fall at Hope College and one at Grand Valley in the spring, both are virtual. People involved do different projects leading up to the discussion.

“It started with my student wanting to find a place to belong. She didn’t feel very connected and she felt very isolated because of her race,” Barton said. “And so I told her hey let’s go check Calling All colors out together, and the rest is history.”
