Girls Cross Country takes 20th; Boys 22nd at State

What Happened: The Grand Haven girls Cross Country team was propelled by several personal best times to take 20th at Saturday’s division 1 state meet in Brooklyn, MI. The boys team placed 22nd behind another strong race from freshman Jack Nicholson.

The Road to State: The boys ran well at regionals, edging out East Kentwood to earn third place and a ticket to state. The girls squad earned second place at regionals behind top-20 finishers juniors Malea Teerman,  Audrey Boersen, Hannah Kenny and  senior Rachel Sedgewick .

Key Contributors: Teerman led the Lady Bucs with a time of 19:47 and 73rd place. Kenny placed 90th, while sophomore Eliza Lowe and freshman Renee Borchers came in at 103 and 106 place respectively.

As for the guys, Nicholson once again led the Buccaneers with a time of 16:25, earning him 53rd place. Senior Nick Johnson placed 94th with a time of 16:53, while fellow senior John Miles came in 119th with a time of 17:04.

They Said it: “Overall we had a good season,” Teerman said. “We exceeded our goal of qualifying for State despite some setbacks early on in the season. We’re still a very young team and have lots of potential, so there is a lot to build off of for next year.”
