Bucs Care Food Pantry members Dolan Smits, Megan Voorhees and Johanna Weigle take inventory on the non-perishable goods in the food pantry.

The Buccaneer Athletic Leadership Committee has started a food drive competition between all winter sports teams. Each team will work to collect the most non-perishable goods for the school food pantry.

The competition leader, Dolan Smits, has gathered representatives from each team and plans to work with food pantry leader, Angie Prieditis, in organizing the competition.

The BALC had a meeting talking about ways that we could start more food drives in sports,” Smits said. “After lots of brainstorming, we decided on making it a competition between the teams.”

A bracket has been made including the basketball, hockey, swim and dive and wrestling teams and will take place at each sports chosen game or meet day.

Teams will choose an event during their season to collect food from family, friends and the community, which will later be counted by the BALC,” Smits said. “Whatever team collects the most food wins and gets a trophy they get to keep until the next food drive competition.”

Smits and the BALC hope that this competition will encourage others to give, even after the competition is completed.

Our hopes are that this does not only provide for the food pantry, but continues from year to year bringing in some friendly competition between teams,” Smits said.
