Flying has always been more than just a career choice for De Klyen. “I really love it, because it lets you get away from stuff and feel in control, while at the same time lets you go places and relax,” De Klyen said. “It’s a unique skill to have, so that makes it fun in a way too.” (Drew Hewitt)

Junior Jordan De Klyen has been training to earn his pilot license since January of this year. De Klyen has been working along side his father, who is a pilot for Delta, and his mother, who works in air traffic control at the Muskegon Airport. De Klyen is planning on following in his dad's "jet stream" and is well on his way to becoming a pilot.

De Klyen and his dad have developed a unique relationship due to their shared past time. “It’s always been something that we can talk about, and while we are up there it is usually just him trying to teach me things,” De Klyen said. “It’s on the ground and just everyday that we bond most through aviation.”

De Klyen is limited to the type of planes that he can fly at the moment. Right now he flies a single engine propeller plane called the Piper Warrior, every time he takes to the skies. But he plans on following in his father’s footsteps to become a pilot flying larger craft. “It’s preparing me for that career field if that’s what I choose to go in to, which I most likely will,” De Klyen said.
