Senior Megan VanKuiken, this years Future Educator Award was selected for good reason. Vankuiken is a dedicated artist with a passion for what she does. Her entries in the 2024 Art Show alone are evidence enough of her hard work and skill acquired through classes here at Grand Haven.
What art classes have you taken?
Intro to studio, Ceramics one and two, jewelry one and two, advanced portfolio, photography and painting.
What class has been your favorite?
Ceramics and jewelry.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m going to Western Michigan University for education and ceramics.
What is your favorite medium?
Ceramics.
Have any of your pieces won any awards?
My two lidded jars won the Dennis Foley award at the Hollard Debut.
Favorite piece of yours?
I either like the Chinese takeout box or the piece where I mixed like two clay bodies together, the marbled ones, the ones that looked all swirly.
What was your favorite piece in the art show?
I really liked Clara Squio De Cezaro’s drawing of the Bavaria Statue.
Do you have a piece that sticks out to you from your high school career?
No.
Do you think you’ve grown as an artist?
Yes, my stuff doesn’t look ugly anymore and it’s symmetrical. That was one of my goals going through school.
