Adam Cook, student advocate and safety coordinator isn’t exactly new to GHHS. Wrestlers from years past will recognize him as Coach Cook, the brains behind the wrestling team.
How long have you been at GHHS?
I’ve been wrestling coach for the past nine years.
Where did you go to high school and college?
I graduated from Grand Haven in 1997. Then I graduated from Baker Community College in Muskegon, transferred to Grand Valley State University and then back to Baker.
Have you found something more difficult than you expected transitioning to GHAPS?
I’m not new to the school, I think the students are great. I’ve already been able to create some relationships. And being a coach for the last nine years has really helped me transition.
What brought you to pursue this position?
When I went to college, my initial goal was to become a teacher. I transferred schools a few times and was in college for longer than expected. So I needed to get a degree and I finished my IT degree, then I was laid off in August and started subbing. I enjoyed being here at the high school, so when the position came open I jumped at the opportunity. My long term goal is to eventually become a teacher here.
What makes your job unique?
The different challenges each day. Some days are more busy than others, some days have different challenges when it comes to student behavior, things like that.
What is your average coffee intake?
Probably two cups a day.
Have you felt accepted here at GHAPS?
Definitely, I know a lot of the staff already from either coaching or as personal friends.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I like to boat in the summer, coach wrestling in the winter and I like to hike as well. My boat is called the Cookie Cutter.
Final comments?
If you see me in my office in pod 7, come say hi! I’m always open to talk if somebody has any issues or just wants to chat.
