Musicians of all levels and ages are invited to a free traditional Irish music session at Loutit District Library on Feb. 15. The event is from 1 to 3 p.m., and musicians and listeners are welcome to come and go as they please.
Loutit Library Public Relations director Larry Halverson got the idea for the event almost three years ago. Halverson, who plays the Irish flute, helps host Irish music sessions at Loutit every third Saturday.
“After the Kalamazoo Public Library was hosting Irish music sessions through acoustic music, I thought, ‘We can do that at our library,’” Halverson said.
Experienced musicians will be on hand to lead beginners with an instrument.
“Anywhere from 18 to 32 musicians come every session,” Halverson said. “The number varies from time to time.”
The session will include various traditional Irish instruments, from fiddles to banjos to pipers. Halverson emphasized that anyone is welcome.
“They don’t have to feel self-conscious about playing,” Halverson said.
