The Science Olympiad team won first place overall at Saturday’s regional tournament. They had a low score of 63 points at the competition held at Grand Valley State University.

“This was our 30th year of competing at the regional tournament,” head coach Michael Reed said. “It was the 24th time we finished first.”

Although the team did well in many of the 23 events, Reed would like the see the technical events be more precise when they move on to the state tournament on May 2.

“There’s a lot more practicing and refining that has to be done on some of those things,” Reed said.

Looking on to the rest of the year, Reed thinks the team will go far.

“Based upon what I saw Saturday, I think we’re in very good shape, and I think it’s not out of the question for us to go to nationals this year,” Reed said.
