The Walk For Light event will take place on Wednesday, May 19 during A and C lunches. The purpose is to raise awareness and remembrance for those who have lost their lives due to suicide.

The event will consist of 8 laps around the track to remember the 8 lives lost to suicide at Grand Haven High School over the last 10 years. There will also be a variety of activities, such as speakers sharing their stories over the loudspeaker and Tropical Smoothie Café bringing 400 smoothies.

The Pay It Forward class organized this event. A group of students and counselors worked together to plan and brainstorm.

“I think it’s important because mental health is an issue I think for everybody and it’s now super important with corona and everything being canceled,” senior Zachary Whitaker said. “I think it’s important for us to all come together. Also, suicides have a big stigma, so I think, to be able to hear some people’s stories and break down the stigma a little bit, is going to be nice.”

The walk is school wide, but if you do not wish to participate, the auxiliary gym will be open to sit in.
