Student Senate spent the last week preparing for their Adopt a Family program which is a way to give back to the community by providing Christmas gifts to families in need. Sets of class representatives are split up and get two families per grade, usually 7-8 families overall. On Dec. 7, Student senate members are delivering the gifts to each family.
Funds earned from homecoming and other events are used to pay for the presents. Student Senate estimate $11,000 to $12,000 was spent to purchase all of the gifts for each of the families.
Families sent a list of things they need and things they would like. Student Senate spent their Saturday night shopping at Target for all the gifts. They purchase food, toys, games and other supplies to ensure the families have a Merry Christmas. Each student gets to know the family a little bit to make sure they get the perfect gifts that fit each family.
After wrapping the gifts the students deliver them to each family directly. There is always a family member waiting for them to make sure the gifts arrive safe and sound.
“Family members are almost always there to greet us; this is nice because we get to give/get hugs, wish each other happy holidays, and make sure that they have everything they need,” Student Senate advisor Brian Williams said.
