Grand Haven wrestling squad claims Division 1 district title

What Happened: The Buccaneer wrestling squad added yet another piece of hardware to their showcase after winning the Division 1 district championship at Mona Shores on Wednesday night. They defeated Mona Shores (60-10) and West Ottawa (49-12), the Bucs are currently ranked No. 7 in the state for Division 1 according to Michigan Grappler.

Key Moment: Seniors Antonio Reyes and Nick Mulcahy both pinned their opponents to earn the Bucs six points apiece. Seniors Evan Johnson, Camden Bertucci and freshman Ryder Smith all dished out technical falls for Grand Haven, earning the team five points apiece as well.

Best Match: Sophomore Drake Morley won a tough match in triple overtime by a two point take down against West Ottawa’s 171-pound wrestler Jeff Puckett.

Quote: “I thought we were very very physical,” senior captain Aaron Cummings said. “We need to touch up on our technique and really get back to basics. But as far as physicality and effort, we did a great job.”
