Ed Sheeran shows a different style in his new singles
January 15, 2017
Sheeran has a reputation of slower heartfelt music, but in these new singles “Castle on the Hill” and “Shape of You,” he challenges that idea. His choice of releasing each song separate was met with a few questions, but upon listening to both, it was clear why he did this; while both songs are worth a listen, they are at two ends of the spectrum.
“Castle On the Hill” is upbeat and felt as if it was flowing through my body. Each lyric paints a picture of his hometown and how he feels about it. He talks about events throughout his childhood. It had a nostalgic feel about him wanting to “go back to the castle on the hill.”
Unlike most pop songs, there was little repetition in “Castle on the Hill.” While this makes it difficult to take in, it gives this it a unique feel that separates it from other songs.
“Shape of You” immediately became one of my favorite songs. Its catchy and foot tapping. As soon as it started I wanted to get up and dance around. I want to ‘come on and be his baby’.
Overall I agree with his choice to make them separate so they have a bigger impact. It also shows how well he can jump from one extreme to the other.
