Holiday celebrations around the world
December 15, 2016
If you were in India, where Hindu is one of the main religions, during Dec. 21 to 25 you would celebrate Pancha Ganapati, to honor Lord Ganesha.
If you were in Thailand on Dec 8, you would celebrate Bodhi Day, or the Day of Enlightenment. The Buddhist holiday celebrates the day that Buddha experienced enlightenment.
If you were in Israel, in which Judaism is one of the major religions, you would take part in Hanukkah. Hanukkah takes place this year from Dec. 6 to 14 and remembers the second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.
If you were in Brazil on Dec. 25, you would celebrate Christmas, or the birth of the Christian prophet Jesus. Christianity comes with several holidays that lead up to Jesus’ birthday.
If you happened to travel to Indonesia, which has the highest Muslim population, you would observe the birthday of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, also known as Mawlid, on Dec. 16.
If you were in Austria on Dec. 5, you would witness the celebration referred to as Krampusnacht. The night remembers Krampus, Santa Claus’s evil alter-ego, who is in charge of giving coal and other gifts to bad children.
