Senior Ocean Veldhouse qualified for the states swim meet and will be participating on Nov. 21 at Hudsonville high school.

“I was super excited and really relieved because I’ve been trying to get that spot before this season,” Veldhouse said.

Veldhouse has been swimming for 12 years now and this will be her fourth state swim meet. She says swimming runs in the family.

“Both of my sisters swam and I was kind of switching between sports,” Veldhouse said. “My parents wanted me to join it, so I just stuck with it.”

She will continue her swimming career after high school at Florida Atlantic University next fall.

Veldhouse says her favorite event is the 100 freestyle, in which her best score is 52.16 seconds.

“I like that swimming is more individual than other sports,” Veldhouse said. “But at the same time, I think being on a team and having teammates is just as important as anything else in the sport.”
