As the new year kicks off at Grand Haven, there’s one fresh face that’s ready to make a real difference—Macy Ellison. This new SXI teacher is passionate about creating an inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
Favorite musical artist?
I grew up down south so country music is my favorite, probably Old Dominion.
Average coffee intake?
Ideal two cups a day.
Pet peeve in the classroom?
When somebody rips up or picks at things if they’re on the desk.
What do you do outside of school?
Not much. I hang out at home, I’ve been trying to teach myself how to crochet. I mostly read and rest away from school.
How long have you been teaching?
This is year seven.
Where did you go to high school?
I went to high school in a small school outside of Atlanta, Georgia.
Where did you go to college?
I went to Stanford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
Have you found something more difficult than you expected transitioning to GHAPS?
Honestly, this has been the easiest transition. This is my third state I’ve taught in, by far it’s the easiest one to transition into.
Have you felt accepted at GHAPS?
Absolutely. There’s a great administrative team and the students have been fantastic.
Have you always wanted to work in education?
Yes, my mom is in special education, and I think this is year 33 for her, so I grew up in her classroom.
What makes your classroom unique?
The different levels of needs and how you can prep as much as you want, but you have to be able to think on the fly.
If you could change one thing about the curriculum, what would that be?
I think it’s something we’ve already positively changed. We’re piloting a new math curriculum this year, and I absolutely love it, so that’s been great to be a part of that change.
What does your typical planning hour look like?
Usually, catching up on emails from any parent communication over the weekend. I’ll meet with our therapy team once every other week, and then my counterpart at White Pines.
Final comments?
I’m ready for a good school year.
