Getting in Gear

For some people, bike riding is a casual hobby or a way to get some exercise, but for junior Christian Miller, it’s a lifestyle. At the age of 17, Miller helps manage Loose Spokes bike shop in Grand Haven.

FINE TUNING: In the process of putting together a new bike, Miller attaches the cranks and pedals, completing the build. “I was fixing and building bikes long before I was hired at Loose Spokes,” Miller recalls. “I am so privileged that my first job is doing something that I love, not too many people can say that.”
BIKING FOR BREAKFAST: Wearing the Loose Spokes team outfit, Miller helps lead the “Breakfast of the Champions” bike ride in Grand Haven. “Shortly after I started working at the shop, I was appointed the position to help set up and lead the bike ride,” Miller said. Every Saturday morning, 30-40 bikers participate in the ride, taking a 30 mile route that starts and ends at the bike shop, where a nice breakfast buffet awaits.
STEADY HANDS: Miller double checks the breaks by tightening them one last time. He thinks of Loose Spokes as a first job and can’t see himself working in the bike fixing business for the rest of his life. “I am only 17, there are so many things that can spark my interest in the coming future,” Miller said. For the time being, Miller is more than satisfied that his first job is working at Loose Spokes.
THE BOSS: Jack Crawford (right) and Christian Miller (left) stand behind the front counter inside of the Loose Spokes bike shop. “A policy that I try to keep alive here in the shop is if you have time to lean, then you have time to clean and Christian does a lot of leaning,” Crawford said jokingly. Miller has been taking online high school classes since his freshman year. Because of these classes, Miller gets to work a lot more than your average teenager.
