Formation Review
February 24, 2016
The queen has done it again. Beyoncé’s new single and music video “Formation” has caught the people’s attention,
not only because it is Queen B but because of its controversial message. Much like her last album, this single came out of nowhere. It just so happened to be the day before she performed with Coldplay and Bruno Mars at the Super Bowl.
The song and video support her culture as a black woman. It wasn’t bashing any other races which I think was a quality I admire. Beyoncé has always had a passion for self empowerment and uplifting pride, this song follows that model.
I liked how the video has some historical events, for example it shows a man holding a newspaper with the title “The Truth” with Martin Luther King Jr.’s face on it. The video addresses some of the problems that African Americans have faced in the past like the death of Trayvon Martin and the Baltimore riot during Spring of last year. For example it has a wall with the words “Stop shooting us” spray painted on it . It also has a young African American boy wearing a black hoodie dancing in front of SWAT officers. Those were to events that caught my eye and I think were creatively expressed.
The song has no lack of inappropriate, sexual phrases but beyond that is a powerful and catchy statement. The song itself has a tight and catchy beat that makes you want to get up and dance while the performers were fierce and in sync, adding a certain power to the whole thing. Her ‘sneaky’ tone at the start of the song gives an air of intensity before the beat drops and her powerful voice takes over.
I loved the music video and the song, I don’t regularly listen to Beyoncé or watch music videos but I enjoyed this song because it sends a positive message to treat not only black people but people of different races more equally, I believe it was well expressed and portrayed. I also think it was an eye opener to everyone who gets influenced by pop culture. I would recommend this song to people of any color, also anyone who enjoys Beyoncé and pop music.
