Saturday, Sept. 27 the Lakeshore Chapter of My Team Triumph will be competing in the annual Old Boys Oktoberfest 5k race. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. starting and finishing in front of Old Boys Brewery in Spring Lake.

My Team Triumph is an organization that helps physically handicapped individuals participate in events such as 5ks and triathlons. The disabled, knows as “captains” race with the help of “angels”, volunteers who use specialized equipment to run with the captains.

“They’re doing something new and foreign,” angel Melissa Richardson said, “And everyone feels good to be empowered and included in community events.”

The race will include seven captains from Grand Haven, Mona Shores, and Ottawa Area schools. Each paired with three angels.

“Its a pretty powerful feeling crossing the finish line and doing something new,” Richardson said, “Everyone’s cheering and its really a great experience.”
