  1. Hundreds of Iranian troops have been deployed to Syria, suggesting that Iran’s priority is to keep Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in power, rather than taking on Islamic State militants.
  2. Both democratic frontrunners, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, highlighted the stage at the first Democratic presidential debate aired on CNN on Wednesday night.
  3. The federal deficit fell to $439 billion, its lowest level since 2007 when the fiscal year ended on Sep. 30, the Treasury Department said Thursday. The 9% deficit decline can be attributed in part to spending reductions and rising profits for corporations and individuals.

  5. Dutch investigators confirmed Tuesday that Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was in fact shot down by a missile last year over Ukraine, but failed to identify who fired the missile and why. 298 passengers, 193 of them Dutch, were killed.
