Senior outside-hitter Autumn Monsma is the player to watch this week for Grand Haven sports.

In a home quad on Sept. 18, Monsma had a strong night against O-K Red conference foe West Ottawa where she tallied 20 kills and 24 digs for the Buccaneers. In addition, Monsma helped the Bucs secure another conference victory as she tallied 16 kills and 15 digs against visiting Hudsonville on Thursday Sept. 25.

Head coach Aaron Smaka attributes Monsma’s success to her outstanding work ethic and high volleyball IQ.

“She understands the game and knows what needs to be done,” Smaka said. “She is one of our leaders; she likes to push, she goes hard every single play and every single practice. She’s really one of the driving forces behind our team.”

Monsma says her determination and hard work has helped her be successful so far this season.

“I always emphasize to the younger players that dreams are possible and that if you put in the hard work and dedication, nothing is impossible,” Monsma said.

Monsma has verbally committed to play volleyball at Northern Michigan University where former Buccaneer teammate Jami Hogeboom currently plays.

“I’m over the top excited to continue my journey at northern,” Monsma siad. “I’m really looking forward to being able to play with Jami once again and overall just to be apart of a great volleyball program.”

Fans should watch for Monsma as Grand Haven hosts the Grandville Bulldogs 7 p.m. Thursday Oct. 9.
