Boys soccer beats Grand Rapids Union to claim district finals

WHAT HAPPENED

The boys varsity soccer team won district finals against Grand Rapids Union 3-1 on Thursday, October 17. Working hard to finish their shots on net, the Bucs were ahead 2-0 after the first half. Union scored their first goal shortly after the Buccaneers gained a third goal in the second half. Dominating possession, the win was secured for the team.

WHAT IT MEANS

The team now moves on to the regional semifinals. They will battle against Okemos on Wednesday, October 23 in Rockford.

KEY PLAYERS

Senior Gavin Jonker scored the first two goals of the game in the first half.

Junior Joey Fischer scored the third goal in the second half.

“Beating Union and Rockford is one of the best feelings in the world because we’re seen as underdogs,” senior Gavin Jonker said. “Being able to have the atmosphere and the fans gave us all the energy we needed to keep us going throughout the game. As a team all of us have gained so much confidence and determination to win every ball and that’s helped us so much the past 3 games.”
