Girls basketball beats Zeeland West
WHAT HAPPENED:
The girls basketball team beat Zeeland West in a non-conference game on Friday, Feb. 28. They came out strong with a 7-0 lead over the Dux in the first quarter. The Bucs were outscored in the 2nd quarter 18-9 and were down by two at half. A strong defensive effort held Zeeland to zero points in the third quarter allowing the Bucs to pull ahead. The final score was 35-26.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN:
The victory leaves the Bucs’ record at 10-10. They remain 6th in the conference and begin district play next week.
KEY PLAYERS:
- Senior Jolee Houle led the team’s offense and scored 11 points.
- Sophomore Zoe Spoelman was a dominant defensive presence with eight blocks.
- Sophomore Molly Long nearly posted a double-double with eight points and ten rebounds.
THEY SAID IT:
“It was hard being back, but at the same time it was nice to see old friends I grew up with and play with them again and be able to share the court with them….. Everything seemed to come full circle, being able to “end” right where I started with the people I started with,” senior Jolee Houle said.
WHAT’S NEXT:
The girls travel to Mona Shores on Wednesday, March 3 for the district semi-finals. They play the winner of Reeths-Puffer vs. Grand Rapids Union.
