Chemistry class watches ‘shoot the sock’ experiment
Chelsea Bender’s full-year chemistry class observed a ‘shoot the sock’ demonstration in the hallway on Friday, Jan. 29.
The demonstration consisted of a countdown and after ten seconds, Bender lit a match which led to an explosion of a sock out of a cannon.
The purpose was to explore stoichiometry and how when reactions take place the reactants and products balance out.
Students performed an earlier experiment and gathered gas bubbles from it to incorporate into the bigger, sock launching show. Once the fire and the gas bubbles reacted, the explosion took place.
“Full-year chemistry is definitely challenging, but it’s fun,” junior Amelia Segroves said. “Mrs. Bender is a great teacher.”
Senior Grace Ostric is excited for her 2nd year on The Bucs’ Blade. This year she hopes to create a successful team of journalists within the classroom....
