- FBI Director James Comey said on Wednesday that the San Bernardino shooters were “homegrown violent extremists” that were inspired by foreign terrorist groups, but weren’t specifically directed by such groups or part of a terrorist network. Neither of the perpetrators, who killed 14 and inured 22 last Wednesday in California, were on law enforcement’s radar previous to the attacks.
- The Department of Justice said Tuesday that Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel would be subject to a federal investigation amid scrutiny that Emanuel has come under in recent weeks over his handling of the shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. An Illinois state representative has introduced a bill that would allow Emanuel to be removed from office by a recall vote.
- Saudi Arabia’s elections on Saturday will mark the first time that women in the country can vote or run for office. Only a small percentage of the country’s voting population has registered, though women’s groups are pushing for voter registration drives.
- International climate talks in Paris are going into an additional day as diplomats try to iron out disagreements over how to share the costs of combating climate change and shifting to clean energy on a global scale. “There was a lot of progress made last night, a long night, but still a couple of very difficult issues that we’re working on,” said U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Friday.
- A New York judge on Friday ruled that daily fantasy sports sites DraftKings and FanDuel may not do business in the state. The sites, which are the country’s two largest fantasy sports companies, will no longer take bets, which were considered by the state’s attorney general to be illegal gambling.
