Apple’s iPhone got a makeover. It has a combination of rounded edges from the original models, with a similar features of the 5 series. As one of the most anticipated phones of the year, we’re here to help you figure out if it’s worth the upgrade.

WHAT’S NEW:

Both of the phones have bigger screens than past models. Though the 6 Plus is just an eighth of an inch bigger than the 6, it makes a huge difference.

Apple also moved the location of the lock button. Originally on top of the phone, it’s now located on the right side. They’ve also changed the shape of the volume buttons from circular to rectangular.

The camera has some upgrades as well, including improved face detection and exposure control. For more information on the new camera, check out Apple’s website.

The phone also houses Apple’s new A8 chip built on a 64-bit architecture to carry more power. They claim getting up to 3x faster speed than before when connected to WiFi.

It’s thinner than ever, and better shaped for one handed use. The screen now extends over the edges, so the bezel is more narrow. This helps with fitting the larger screen in.

WHAT’S TO LIKE:

Finally, Apple has caught on with the large-phone-trend started by Android. The larger screen is perfect for watching videos, playing games and surfing social media.

It’s convenient the lock button has been moved. Now that the phone is bigger, It makes sense to place the button on the side.

A better camera is perfect for the daily selfie and the occasional scenery photo.

The new iPhones also come with iOS 8 pre-downloaded and faster WiFi, so that’s another plus.

WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE:

Whether the larger size and shape are good or bad is a personal opinion. If you have relatively small hands, it may be harder to scroll and navigate at the same time with one hand.-

In terms of grip, it’s nice to have a more boxy shape. But because the new iPhone has rounded edges it’s kind of slippery, which can be annoying and a hazard.

Some apps aren’t compatible with ios 8 yet, but that will come up with updates as the makers adapt and smooth out the kinks.

The new camera is protruding, meaning it sticks out a bit and won’t lay flat on a hard surface.

WHO SHOULD UPGRADE:

Overall, both new iPhones are great. Users not only have an option of two different sizes, but can experience retina display on either of them with the new iOS 8.

If you still have an iPhone 4 or 4s, it’s probably a good idea to upgrade because iOS 8 isn’t compatible with it anymore. It’s possible to download the software but the experience isn’t the same. Plus, compared to other phones these days, the 4/4s look like a brick.

If you have an iPhone 5 that works fine and isn’t cracked, then I wouldn’t bother with the upgrade unless your contract is up.

If you have last years iPhone 5s/5c it’s not worth it. It’d be a waste of money because you could easily download iOS 8 on your phone. But if you absolutely can’t live without a thinner, larger screen phone with retina display, go for it. Or if you have hands the size of a baseball mit.
