In Focus with Lucy Roop

Junior Lucy Roop, along with several other students, was recently recognized for her outstanding performance as part of the State Honors Choir at the Michigan Music Conference. The event took place from Jan. 18 to Jan. 21 at the DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. Later on, All States will happen and Lucy will also have the opportunity to be a part of that event. Now, let’s take a deeper look into the details, and get to know a little more about Lucy.

What did attending the event mean to you?

It really meant the world. I didn’t make it last year so I really was driven this year especially [the fact] that everyone from the regional level this year from our school made it. I was so proud of everyone and just really glad that our work was finally paying off.

What was your favorite and least favorite part about the event?

I think besides spending time with people, my favorite part was probably when they took us to the Grand Gallery where it’s maybe three stories high. The ceiling is entirely made of windows so you can see the clouds and everything. And the acoustics are just amazing. Everyone obviously had to audition with the same pieces, so we all performed a piece there, and the way that when you would stop, [the music] rang out through the entire place was so amazing.

When you were younger, did you see yourself in Choir?

I always think back to when they did the band, orchestra and choir presentations when we were in fourth grade. I remember watching a couple of choirs and I was like, wow, that’s really elite, that’s so amazing, I don’t know if I could ever make it that far. I [didn’t] know if I’d want to really get up there, but I think especially just as I’ve gone throughout high school, it’s really become more of a passion of mine that I’ve been able to pursue.

What are some of your hobbies?

So obviously, I really love music and just singing in [the] choir and that sort of stuff. But [i’m] also really into the arts in all capacities. So just like painting and stuff.

What type of music do you listen to?

That’s a tough question. I mean, a few years ago I got really into Elton John and just other artists from that time.

What’s the most fun thing you’ve done this past month?

I would have to say states honestly. I mean, it’s the first thing that comes to mind because it’s so fresh, but yeah, it was.
