What: In a last minute venue change, the Bucs were able to defeat the Sailors of Mona Shores 58-55 in a down to the wire game.

What Happened: Due to a power outage at Grand Haven High School, the game was moved to The Pit, where it once hosted Buccaneer basketball from 1953 to 1997. The Pit is a very tiny, compact gym which makes for ear piercing noise and is very hard for opposing teams to come in and get a victory, this was exactly the feeling on Friday night’s game. Grand Haven held the lead for most of the first half and felt right at home. After a couple made three pointers by the Sailors, the game was notched up at 32 a piece entering the half. Mona Shores was able to recapture the lead after the third quarter, where the score was 48-44 heading into the final quarter of play. The fourth quarter was full of lead changes and acrobatic plays, but the Bucs were able to capture their first win if the season due to clutch free throw shooting at the end of the game by senior guard Bryce Taylor.

Key Players for the Bucs: Senior point guard Casey Constant nearly had a double-double, putting up 13 points and 9 rebounds, senior center Jon Elias scored 10 points and 5 rebounds, Junior Owen Ross was also able to contribute with 9 points

They said it: “The atmosphere was crazy,” senior center Jon Elias said. “It really feels like the crowd is on top of you. I think it definitely contributed to the win, all of us were pumped up and when you’re out there with a loud student section in a loud gym good things are bound to happen.”

Up next: The Buccaneers travel to Spring Lake to take on the Lakers, a team coming off of a great team win over the Muskegon Big Reds.
