After a year of planning, and weeks of practicing, the 2014 Catalina performance went on without a hitch. The show, Sun-Kissed Summer included songs that one may listen to while at the beach or on long summer nights. This year line up was a combined effort all the officers involved, including seniors McKenna Mahacek, Claire Borchers, Kate Armstrong, Brooke Mattson, Austin Bessinger, Karl Johnson, Josh Tooker and Josh Nicholson. The shows were a success, (even sold out) and the performers put on quite a show. Here are some photos from Saturdays performance of Sun-Kissed Summer.
Swimmers link arms to create a line across the pool deck during their dance to song “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons. Each year the participants from the girls swim team make up their own group.
Catalina presidents McKenna Mahacek and Karl Johnson strike a pose during their duo dance to the song “Paradise” by Coldplay.
Sophomore cuties show off their toe point during their class routine to “Brighter than the Sun” by Colbie Caillat.
Officer Claire Borchers (right) sophomore Anna Dexter (middle) and senior Carly Grove (left) smile while creating an X formation during “Mermaid”.
Cuties begin their deck routine to “Mermaid” by Train with a wave-like formation.
The boys line up on the deck for part of their routine. After a few quick dance moves the boys dove back into the water to continue the rest of their dance.
Japanese exchange student Masato Arima shoots out of the water with help from fellow Catalina swimmers. Arima is one of four exchange students who took part in the show.
Senior Catalina officers Mckenna MaHacek, Claire Borchers, Kate Armstrong and Brooke Mattson point out to the crowd during the opening performance “Reflections”.
Senior Roxy Glasser listens to the officers as they give a final pep talk before the last show of the weekend.
Senior officers Austin Bessinger, Claire Borchers, Karl Johnson, Mckenna MaHacek, Kate Armstrong, Josh Tooker, Brooke Mattson and Josh Nicholson pose for a final photo before handing Catalina over to the 2015 officers.
The newly announced 2015 officers pose for a picture. It is tradition for next years officers to be announced at the end of the final show. 2015 officers consist of juniors Stephanie Shantz, Madison Wilder, Tressa Bathke, and president Bailey Colella. 2015 boys officers are juniors Spencer Poort, David Kooistra, president Adam Greer and Nate Dufon.
Junior Catalina cuties Bailey Colella and Brittney Werner (left to right) smile in circle formations during their routine to “Everybody Talks” by Neon Trees.
Junior Catalina participant Spencer Poort asks girlfriend Bianca Krause to prom in a way only the Catalina boys could pull off. During a planed skit between performances, Poort was escorted to the front of the stands with a towel draped over his face and chest. The announcer continued by describing that under the towel was the “ugliest man in the world”. Several of the male participants peeked underneath the towel only to express looks of disgusted and horror. Finally they asked for a volunteer from the audience. Moments before Krause had been asked to join the swimmers on the pool deck, not knowing why. She was then called forward to peek under the towel, only to find her boyfriend waiting with a flower and “Prom?” written across his chest.
Freshman Allison Matz smiles at the crowd before sinking into the water during the freshman class dance routine. It is a tradition for the freshman cuties to wear the flowered swim caps during their class dance.
