Cole’s assists help power squad to win over top-ranked Portage Central

What Happened: Grand Haven volleyball started the night off with a hard fought win over Stevensville Lakeshore, 23-25, 25-22, 15-19. They then moved on to defeat the number one ranked team in Class A, Portage Central, 26-24, 25-20. The Bucs then secured the quad with a final victory over Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central 25-14, 26-24. The Lady Bucs won the quad Thursday night with a 3-0 record . Their overall record is 18-1.

Key player: Sophomore setter Katie Cole led Grand Haven with 65 assists and three aces. This is Cole’s first year on varsity.

They said it: “Overall as a team we really communicated well,” senior Autumn Monsma said. “We really stepped up. I’m really proud of what this team has done in practice and it shows up in games – it shows that we want it. And I think that this year we really want it.”

Highlight of the night: After falling behind number one ranked Portage Central, the Lady Bucs made a comeback with 6 straight points, then sealed the win with a spike from senior Amy Kober.

On deck: Grand Haven travels to East Kentwood on Saturday for another quad.
