Orchestra’s Halloween Duo

It’s not everyday that you watch two full grown men dance, sing and dress up as Elvis and Lady Gaga. But when you do, it’s definitely during the orchestra’s annual Halloween production.

Psychology teacher Aaron Portenga and Band Director Iain Novoselic’s silly duo began with a bet made by Orchestra Director Melissa Meyers. Since then it has been a tradition that everyone looks forward to.

“It started with Mrs. Meyers dressing me up as Lady Gaga,” Novoselich Said. “She was throwing poker cards at us, that was four years ago.”

At first it was just a goofy bet where they would go on stage, do a silly performance and give the crowd a good laugh. Now it’s much more than a bet, it’s a tradition that everyone loves and gets excited to see. Their apparel keeps getting more creative and funny over the years.

“Since then, I’ve been Lurch, Darth Vader, a fox,” Novoselich said. “And have a very magical role for this year’s show. Mr. Portenga has been featured on drums, dressed as celebrities and his reign goes back further than mine.”

Though they are the ones doing the singing and dancing, Novoselich and Portenga do not put together their costumes. Meyers, the mastermind behind the ‘Portenga and Novoselich duo’, is in charge of the crazy costumes the two end up in.

“It has been a tradition now for about five years,” Meyers said. “They make us laugh to the point of tears every year, it now wouldn’t be a Halloween concert without them. They are such good sports about it too. I have had them sing, dance and act skits out, it’s a fun experience.”

Between the costume contest, the pumpkin carving contest, and the huge buckets of candy, there is an overload of excitement. The dynamic duo only plays off of and adds to that.

“It is cool and has always been a fun event,” Portenga said. “It is really cool seeing the entire orchestra dressed up.There’re Judges judging costumes of people in the orchestra, and the audience. Plus there’s always huge bins of candy, it’s awesome.”
