Most of the time, phones are a major distraction while trying to study. However, with these five apps, your phone will not only stop distracting, but will transform into a studying supertool. So instead of mindlessly scrolling through Twitter, use your smartphone to check out a few of these free and reliable apps.

Quizlet

Quizlet features universally shared vocab cards for any subject. Not only can you search from hundreds of other people’s pre-made vocabulary cards, but you can also personalize your own set. It takes less time to make the cards here than handwriting each and includes games and testing options. As an added bonus, the app only requires data to search for vocabulary. So throw away those piles of paper and organize them all onto a single app!

PhotoMath

Besides giving you the answer to basically any level of math problems free of charge, this app will layout a step by step guide of how to solve the problem. All you have to do is take a picture and enter it it into the app. It probably wouldn’t be smart to use on every single problem, however, if you are having trouble with a couple of skills occasionally, this is the place to go. 7 has just recently come onto the scene so it is not yet perfected. It will only work if the problem is printed like in a textbook or worksheet, handwritten ones can not be recognized yet.

Duolingo

This is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to learn a new language. You can choose what you want to study and in what language with the aid of games, timing, and the incentive of points. This app is enticing and has been proven by psychologists to be very effective in a very short time. So if you take a foreign language, be sure to check this out.

Khan Academy

With this one app, you can get special help tackling math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. The best part about this app is when you start you get to choose an avatar that grows with the progress you make in each subject. The app offers general and specialized skills help such as adding video clips, quizzes, and step by step instructions. If you have trouble with any subject, you can safely let yourself trust in Khan Academy.

SparkNotes

If you suffer from not understanding what is going on a work of classic literature, you may want to check out this useful tool. This app can help you there. For almost every well known book, SparkNotes offers a summary and analysis for each chapter along with a short quiz at the end. The app also gives character evaluations, explanations for important quotes, and links to other useful resources. Use wisely and keep in mind the analyses are biased, so read critically. Quit ripping your hair out over Shakespearean language, and give this a chance.
